A Walmart Neighborhood Market is coming to Goose Creek.
According to Goose Creek Mayor Mike Heitzler, the new market is tentatively slated to be located on St. James/Hwy. 176 in Goose Creek.
“The new store will be located on the corner of Central and St. James on the school side,” Heitzler said. “It’s a smaller store designed to serve smaller neighborhoods.”
According to the Walmart website, the Neighborhood Market floorplans are about 41,000 square feet, approximately one-third the size of a standard Walmart store.
Goose Creek Planning Director Sarah Hanson likened the Neighborhood Market to an IGA grocery store.
“There will be less merchandise quantities, not as many different brand names. Where Walmart may stock seven or eight different brand names, this would only stock two or three.
“The new store will offer quick and convenient shopping.”
Included are groceries and general merchandise, such as fresh produce, deli, paper goods, pet products, hardware and pharmacy services. The store will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“We met with the Neighborhoo Market people on June 12 and they were very impressed with Goose Creek. They said, of the 15 Neighborhood Markets, Goose Creek appeared the most together,” Heitzler said.
The Walmart Neighborhood Markets debuted in 1998, and now there are more than 300 stores across the country. They feature a full grocery department, including organic and natural selections, prepared food options, fresh-baked breads, a self-serve deli and a bakery.
The store will also feature financial services and Walmart Site-to-Store, which allows customers to order merchandise online at Walmart.com and have it shipped to the Greenville store for pickup.
“Goose Creek fared very well,” Heitzler said.
