Dale Feagin never saw this one coming. He thought he was getting a surprise store inspection at his Hess Express Store at 429 St. James Ave. in Goose Creek.
What he got instead was a much nicer surprise.
His family, friends, store associates and members of Hess corporate management arrived around midday on June 24 to honor Feagin for being named the 2014 Store Manager of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores (SCACS).
“I never expected this, not at all,” said a surprised Feagin as a party of about 30 well wishers descended on his St. James Ave. store.
Feagin’s boss and Market Leader for Hess Express, Doug Rohe nominated him for the award. An SCACS committee selected Feagin from a group of nominees around the state. The SCACS represents more than 3,600 stores and managers in South Carolina. Feagin will receive his award at the 2014 SCACS Annual Convention in Hilton Head on July 20.
“This is a tremendous honor to be selected like this, but this is not about me at all,” Feagin said. “It’s about the people I work with and the company I work for. We come in here and try to make this a pleasant experience for our customers every day.”
Feagin’s wife Cindy said this is the type of man her husband is, the type not to take credit, but to remain in the background while others share in the spotlight.
“He wants to do the best he can at what he does,” she said. “He has such a positive work ethic. This isn’t just a job to him.”
Daughter Whitney Feagin said her father works hard every day.
“We have cut short vacations because of things that may be going on at work,” she said. “It’s not that he has to do what’s extra, he wants to. With gas prices being so high he wants to make the shopping as pleasant as possible.
“He doesn’t know how to work any other way but to give everything he has.”
Feagin has worked for Hess Express for eight years and has made his store one of the top stores for the company. He is known as the “go-to” Hess manager in Charleston, Columbia, and Myrtle Beach.
His accomplishments include being an effective manager of one of the highest volume sites in South Carolina, consistently hitting all financial and appearance goals, and volunteering to be a “Guest Services” trainer for Hess Express. He has trained more than 200 hourly employees and received his Certified Trainer License for Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
Feagin was even selected as the Region 4 “Manager of the Year” in 2013, by competing against 150 different managers around the region.
Feagin is active in Faith Christian Academy as the assistant football coach and Sunday School teacher at the Turning Point Church.
The Store Manager of the Year presentation was a surprise.
SCACS Treasurer Sheri Mehaffey, said it best: “The Store Manager of the Year Award is like winning an Oscar in the Convenience Store Industry.”
