O.L. Thompson III was recently named the 2014 Mining Association of South Carolina (MASC) “Miner of the Year.”
A native of Charleston and graduate of Hanahan High School, Thompson earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics from Charleston Southern University. He is currently CEO of O.L. Thompson Construction Company, Inc., Thompson Trucking Inc., and Wando Redi-Mix, LLC.
Thompson started his business by driving onsite dump trucks moving materials and stockpiling sand at his father’s pit at the age of 12. He is also responsible for operating crushers to recycle concrete material for use on construction jobs. He maintains and manages excavations, which can effectively accommodate unsuitable soils in an environmentally acceptable manner. Thompson has reclaimed borrow pits into ponds for recreational facilities as well as constructing habitats for fishing and for hunting.
Thompson is former Chairman of Santee Cooper, and former Chairman of the South Carolina Trucking Association. He has served on numerous state, local and association boards. In 2012, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Nikki Haley. He and his wife Toni have three children, Matthew, Dan and Adrienne. Thompson enjoys hunting and fishing in his spare time.
The MASC consists of individuals, firms and corporations whose common interest is the development of mineral resources, in an environmentally sound manner, in South Carolina.
