Hawks’ Denmark headed to Coastal

Rob Gantt/Gazette Hanahan's Kahlim Denmark was one of the state's top sprinters this spring.

Kahlim Denmark’s track and field career is headed toward the beach.

Denmark, MVP of Hanahan’s Class AAA state championship team, recently signed a letter of intent to continue running at Coastal Carolina. Coastal is located near Myrtle Beach.

At state, Denmark was part of the Hawks’ winning 4 x 400 meter relay team and also earned silvers in the 200-meter dash, 4 x 100 meter relay and bronze in the 400-meter dash.

“Between his sophomore and junior years, he really developed,” Hanahan boys track and field coach David Pratt said. “He got faster, and this year he worked on his strength a lot. He learned how to run. You can’t just line up and outrun people. There is a strategy to sprinting.”

Denmark made tremendous strides compared to the state meet in 2013. A year earlier, Denmark was seventh in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Pratt said he thought Coastal was a perfect fit for Denmark. It’s not so big a program he’ll get lost in the mix, and it’s a perfect distance from home.

But there will be an adjustment from high school to college.

“You’ve got to get stronger and there will be some transition for him because he’s always played football in the fall,” Pratt said. “Now, it’s going to be full-time track. I think that might be the biggest transition that most of them have to make. They’ve never done that before.”

Denmark plans to major in accounting.
