Thoughts on Goose Creek business

Dear Editor:

There has been considerable debate amongst local mayoral candidates about whether to attract new business and industry into Goose Creek and Moncks Corner actively –– or not at all. Many South Carolinians still have mixed emotions about companies that have swooped in and ultimately left our area.

One such example is Porsche, the German automotive manufacturer credited with engineering and producing one of the world’s most iconic and desired sports cars. Porsche maintained a U.S. destination and repair factory here in Charleston for years, then closed and moved elsewhere over a decade ago.

I’ve been a Porsche restoration customer for seven years now, patronizing custom metal, paint, mechanical, and upholstery shops throughout the region. Some area shops are capable of working on and restoring German vehicles, many are not.

Two local craftsmen who worked for that Porsche facility here in Charleston were Jay and Steve Zerbst. Before their severance checks even arrived from Stuttgart, the Zerbst brothers decided to not leave town with the company, and rather stay and build Carolina Custom Paint & Body here, armed with the German training, experience, and industry contacts they had acquired.

Based on my experience as an unbiased customer, it seems that Goose Creek and Moncks Corner are diamonds-in-the-rough waiting to be polished and branded, perhaps as a classic or luxury car restoration haven, akin to the way home builders flock to John’s Island, or restaurateurs flock in downtown Charleston. Of course there are other economic brands and business strategies for Goose Creek and Moncks Corner to develop on their own.

My point is that if all local leaders, citizens, and business owners can come together, decide on which industries to develop seriously, and then convey a more cohesive community brand regionally and nationally... business and industry and jobs will come to Goose Creek and Moncks Corner residents more sustainably.
