Columbia – Winning races at state isn’t just about speed. There’s a little more to it.

Goose Creek sprinter Deondre Daniels executed a gameplan to become a 400-meter state champion on Saturday.

“He ran a smart race,” Goose Creek track and field coach Joe Hauff said. “He knew the strengths of the other runners and was able to execute his plan and finish the 400 well. He had to kick a little sooner because of how well the other competitors ran. He worked hard all season and set a goal to be the 400-meter champion and he was able to achieve his goal. “

Daniels finished the race in 48.22, almost a photo finish at the end with the runner-up. A quick start was enough to lead him to gold.

“Since I was in lane two, I had to get out strong,” said Daniels, a junior. “That’s what I did. I kind of died in the last 100 but I was able to get the W.”

Daniels also qualified for state in the 200 meters, finishing eighth, and ran a leg for the 400-meter relay team that placed fourth.

“He is great to be around and is very helpful to our other runners,” Hauff said. “I am excited to have him back for his senior year.”

Caleb Kinlaw, Devontae Goodwin and Montrae Gilliard ran the other three legs in the 400 relay.

Stratford had a pair of runner-ups at state. Senior Brandon Mullins (14-0) was second in the pole vault and freshman Aaliyah Deveaux placed second in the discus (112-02). She was also third in the shot put.

Both earned all-state honors.

“They did everything we expect from athletes here at Stratford,” Stratford coach Brandon Beckman said. “They represented the school, community and their families extremely well… Brandon set a new school record, which is our goal going into the state meet. Aaliyah tied her PR in the discus and earned all-state honors, which is an amazing accomplishment for a freshman.”

Goose Creek’s Destiny McKnight (110 hurdles), Cane Bay’s Rashad Andrews (110 hurdles) and Cane Bay’s Sydney Hickert (pole vault) all had fourth-place finishes.
