Hanahan's Dyson inks with Fire Ants

Hanahan senior second baseman Kayla Dyson (center) signed a letter of intent with USC Sumter.

It was easy to see Kayla Dyson had the tools to play at the next level.

But it's what you can't see that helped the Hanahan High School second baseman start on the varsity for five years and land a scholarship from USC Sumter. She was driven to succeed.

“She plays with a lot of passion,” HHS coach Katrina Moffett said. “That's something you can't coach. When she's out there, she's determined to get it done.”

This season, Dyson batted .360 from the leadoff spot, scored a team-high 23 runs and had an on-base percentage of .435. The Hawkettes finished second in the region and made the Class AAA playoffs.

“She's been the starting second baseman since her eighth-grade year,” Moffett said. “She is very solid in the field and has been a great leadoff hitter. She's got a great mentality up there. She sees a lot of pitches.”

Kayla's father, Mike, is one of the HHS assistant coaches. He's been both the coach and the parent but never had to say too much to her. Anything that came up was her idea, he said.

“I never opened my mouth to her,” he added. “She'd ask what can I work on or can you help me with this, or say we need to go work on hitting. It was never me getting on to her.”

Dyson's son, Kyle, is a sophomore pitcher at Charleston Southern. Both reaped what they sewed.

“The first thing that comes to my mind is all the hard work,” Mike Dyson said. “When you've played as long as she's played, you want to be able to get to that next level. There have been a lot of summers, a lot of workouts. She gets to further her education and that's a blessing.”

Kayla also played volleyball, basketball and ran track in high school.

Kayla's younger sister, MacKenzie, is still in the Hanahan program.

“We're going to try to go 3 for 3,” Mike Dyson joked.
