Former Gators coach Dobbels leaving CSU

Rob Gantt/Gazette Brad Dobbels has resigned as assistant basketball coach at CSU. Dobbels formerly coached at Goose Creek High School.

Charleston Southern men’s basketball assistant coach Brad Dobbels is leaving the program to pursue other professional opportunities in order to spend more time with his family, head coach Barclay Radebaugh announced on Thursday. Dobbels formerly coached at Goose Creek High School, leading the Gators to one state championship.

Dobbels, a 1989 CSU graduate, spent the last three seasons on Radebaugh’s staff and played an instrumental role in helping the Bucs to 51 wins during that time.

The Bucs put together a winning season for the first time in 16 years during Dobbels’ first campaign in 2011-12, and followed up with the program’s first Big South regular season championship in 26 years in 2012-13.

“We’re very thankful for Brad and the many contributions he has made to our basketball program over the last three years,” Radebaugh said. “Brad is a first-class person and an excellent coach, and has been a big part of our success. We wish him the best going forward.”

Before coaching at CSU, Dobbels built a particularly impressive program at GCHS after taking over a 4-19 team in 1997-98.

Four years later, the Gators finished 25-3 and played in one of their five Lower State championship games under Dobbels.

The highlight of his tenure came in 2008-09 when the Gators went 27-2 and captured the Class AAAA championship. The Gators also played for the state title in 2005-06.

He compiled a 292-92 record at GCHS and his teams were known for their tenacious defense.
