A Berkeley County fund has given a $10,000 grant to Lowcountry Food Bank to aid in prevention of child hunger in the county.
Giving Back to Berkeley County of Coastal Community Foundation gave the grant that will be implemented at two Berkeley County schools — Boulder Bluff Elementary and Sedgefield Middle School — during the 2014-2015 school year.
According to LCFB, one in four Berkeley County children is at risk of hunger.
The grant will continue to support BackPack Buddies, a program designed to prevent weekend hunger for children at Boulder Bluff Elementary, and to support School Pantry, a program providing shelf-stable foods to older children and their families at Sedgefield Middle School.
“Boulder Bluff is a Sedgefield Middle feeder school, so this gift will create continuity in services for many Berkeley County children and families who know the realities of hunger. We are thrilled to be able to continue to support the children of Boulder Bluff Elementary while expanding School Pantry into Sedgefield Middle,” LCFB President and CEO Pat Walker said.
The grant from Giving Back to Berkeley County of Coastal Community Foundation will provide more than 11,000 pounds of food to children and their families. The grant creates more than 1,400 backpacks of food for students at Boulder Bluff Elementary through support of its BackPack Buddies program. The grant also expands School Pantry into Sedgefield Middle School and will create 360 boxes of shelf-stable food for older children and their families.
