District officials say gun found in middle schooler's bookbag

  • Tuesday, May 6, 2014

A middle school student was recommended for expulsion Tuesday morning after bringing a gun to school, according to the Berkeley County School District.

The gun was found in a Sedgefield Middle School student's backpack, district spokeswoman Susan Haire said. No students were hurt in the incident, she said, and the school day was not interrupted.

“Berkeley County School District does not tolerate the possession of firearms on school grounds. ... Charges were filed with law enforcement, and the student was immediately removed from campus,” a prepared statement released by the district said.

According to Haire, parents were made aware of the situation through the district's notification system.
