A 13-year-old student at Sedgefield Elementary School was arrested and charged Tuesday morning with possession of a firearm on school property. He was additionally charged with making threats.

A tragedy was avoided Tuesday morning by the actions of a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer and as a result a 13-year-old student was charged, according to a BCSO statement.

Deputy Gary Lipsey, the resource officer at the school, was contacted Tuesday morning by a relative of a 14-year-old student who expressed concern for the safety of that student.

Lipsey contacted the seventh grade administrator to have the 13-year-old pulled from class.

When questioned, the 13-year-old student admitted to being in possession of a semi-automatic handgun which was located in the students backpack.

The student stated that he had taken his mother’s gun without her knowledge.

The incident apparently stemmed from a past altercation the two had been involved in, whereas, he felt that the 14-year-old was going to harm him.

The 13-year-old student was placed under arrests and transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.

“Berkeley County School District (BCSD) does not tolerate the possession of firearms on school grounds,” BCSD Public Information Officer Susan Haire said in an email. “A gun was discovered in a student’s backpack at Sedgefield Middle school. No students were hurt, and there were no interruptions to the school day.

“Charges were filed with law enforcement. The student was immediately removed from campus. Per the district’s protocol — and as clearly stated in District Policy JDE and the BCSD Student Handbook — the school has recommended the student for expulsion.

“The school has notified parents using the parent notification system.”
