Gators eyeing start of spring practice

Rob Gantt/Gazette Gators running back Tyrik Johnson rushed for over 1,100 yards and 24 touchdowns last fall.

High school football teams can begin spring practice on Monday, starting their journeys for the 2014 season.

On Red Bank Road, Goose Creek High School coach Chuck Reedy said the Gators are aiming for the top of the mountain– again.

“Our expectations are very high and we embrace the fact that we are expected to compete for the championship every year,” Reedy said.

Last season, the Gators were 12-0 before getting stunned in the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs by South Pointe.

“The way that last season ended was very disappointing,” Reedy said, “but the work ethic exhibited by our players is the best that I have seen since the 2011 team. We have some outstanding returning players and are looking for some young players to step up.”

GCHS last won the state title in 2011.

The Gators are slated to wrap up spring drills on May 21 with a scrimmage.

Reedy said he expects the Gators to be very explosive on offense again. Goose Creek has topped 2,500 points over the last four seasons, a total of 55 games.

The Gators have to replace Dantez Bennamon at quarterback but have 2013 backup Dominique Jefferson and West Ashley transfer Pedro Manigault waiting in the wings.

Running backs Caleb Kinlaw (Wisconsin) and Evan McField (The Citadel) have moved on too. Rising senior Tyrik Johnson returns after rushing for 1,147 yards and 24 touchdowns.

Speedy receiver Deondre' Daniels will be a senior. He had 34 grabs for 610 yards last season.

Defensively, rising senior linebacker K.J. Wood is the top tackler returning. He had 119 total stops. Outside linebacker Maurice Bonneau-Gaillard made 88 stops.

“Defensively, we are big and talented up front but need to find a couple linebackers,” Reedy said.

• The Gators are currently selling ads for their football program to help raise money for the season-opening trip to Ohio.
