Post 166 sets legion tryouts

Rob Gantt/Gazette Cane Bay High School and Florence-Darlington Tech product Austin Timm batted .358 last summer for Post 166's American Legion team.

First-year Post 166 senior American Legion baseball coach Josh Kubisz has set the tryout dates for the two baseball teams Post 166 will field this summer.

Tryouts for both the junior and senior legion teams will be held at Goose Creek High School Friday, May 9 (6:30 p.m.) and Saturday, May 10 (2 p.m.).

Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1995 can try out for the senior team.

Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1997 can try out for the junior team.

Last summer, Post 166 finished 22-12 and went 1-2 in the state tournament.

The club won the League 1 title and won at least one game at state for the third year in a row.

Many key players can return this summer, including outfielder/pitcher Cody Smith. Smith led the team in hitting with a .402 batting average.

He was also the top pitcher with a 5-2 record and 3.82 ERA.

Pitcher/infielder Austin Timm batted .358.

Infielder/pitcher Tyler Rio was at .319 while catcher/infielder Christian Sillanpa batted .289.

Post 166ís juniors were third in the state in 2013. The squad finished with a 13-4 mark and coasted to the League 1 title.
