Gators Bennamon headed for Peach State

Rob Gantt/Gazette Goose Creek's Dantez Bennamon has committed to play for Clayton State.

Goose Creek High School two-sport standout Dantez Bennamon is headed to the Peach State to continue his basketball career.

Bennamon committed to Clayton State on Monday. Clayton State is a Div. II school located in Morrow, Ga., near Atlanta. He selected the Lakers over USC Aiken, Lander and Newberry.

“You’ve won the battle when you can go somewhere you’re comfortable with, get your education paid for and play a sport you love,” GCHS coach Blake Hall said.

Bennamon, a 6-foot guard, averaged 17 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists for the Gators on the hardwood this past winter and was named to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association’s Class AAAA all-state team.

As a junior, he averaged 20.9 points and 6.1 rebounds.

On the football field, Bennamon was a two-year starter at quarterback. As a senior, he accounted for nearly 2,300 yards of offense and 16 touchdowns.

He drew offers from Citadel and Presbyterian in football.

The Lakers are in the Peach Belt Conference.

“I think the Peach Belt is probably the top Div. II conference in the country,” Hall said. “They typically have between four and six teams in the Top 25.”

Clayton State was 10-16 overall and 6-13 in the PBC last season.

The Lakers began basketball in 1990-91 and have won three conference championships. They last went to the NCAA Div. II national tournament in 2008.
