Authorities are investigating an apparent domestic violence incident in Ladson early today in which a man shot and injured a woman, then later fatally shot himself.
The man was in training to be a trooper with the S.C. Highway Patrol. His identity has not yet been released.
About 2 a.m., deputies with the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office went to a house on Mickler Drive after a 911 call from a woman who had run to a neighbor’s house for help after a man shot at her, sheriff’s Capt. Tony Phinney said.
The woman was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not appear to have been life-threatening, Phinney said.
Deputies surrounded the house where the shooting had taken place. When they got inside, they found the man dead from gunshot wound, Phinney said.
Phinney did not say the shooting was self-inflicted. “That’s for the coroner to decide,” he said.
“It appears to have been an attempted murder suicide,” County Coroner Chis Nisbet said. He is not releasing the man’s name until his mother is notified.
S.C. Highway Patrol Lt. Kelly Hughes verified that the man was a basic training student in the Patrol’s academy and was scheduled to graduate from the basic course on May 9.
