Rob Gantt/Gazette The Goose Creek Gators finished second in Region 7-AAAA after sweeping a pair of region games from Wando.

The Goose Creek Gators baseball team staked a claim to second place in the region with an extra innings victory over Wando in Mount Pleasant on Wednesday.

The Gators took advantage of three Warriors errors in the top of the ninth inning to score a pair of runs that were the difference in a 4-2 victory.

Goose Creek (10-5, 6-2 Region 7-AAAA) won the first region game in Goose Creek on Monday, 8-4.

Bryce Jonason earned the win on the bump, getting the final eight outs in relief of Goose Creek starter Tyler Rio.

Jonason allowed no hits in two-plus innings, striking out three and walking one.

Rio allowed three hits and two runs over 6.1 innings. He walked five and struck out three.

Cody Smith and Jonason had two hits each. The Gators had seven hits.

Smith’s RBI single in the third inning gave Goose Creek a 1-0 lead and Zach Owens made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Wando evened the score in the bottom of the sixth on a sac fly and wild pitch.

The Gators went in order in the seventh and eighth innings before Wando began to boot the ball around.

In the top ninth, Dalton Lash and Zach Owens both reached on fielding errors by the left side of Wando’s infield and later scored.

Wando managed just a walk in the bottom of the inning as Jonason improved to 2-1.

The Gators begin the Class AAAA playoffs in the District V bracket. Lexington, the Region 5 champion is the top seed.

Goose Creek will square off against Region 8’s third place team on Thursday, May 1. Beaufort seemed likely to finish in that spot.

Other play dates in the district playoffs are May 3, 5 and 7.
