Lauren James of Goose Creek recently took the top spot in the Water Missions International Poetry contest.

Lauren, 11, is a sixth grader at Marrington Middle School of the Arts and placed first overall in the Middle School Division. She is the daughter of Javier and Christy Acosta of Goose Creek.

Below is Lauren’s poem, titled “Water.”

Our world is full of water.

We see it everyday

In our homes and schools

The pools where we play.

Water is essential.

Without it we would die.

So think, if we lost water,

If all the streams were dry,

There would be no fish,

No clouds in the sky,

No rainbows of color

That light up our eyes,

No people or plants,

Forget animals.

Our world would be barren,

Nothing to see.

Because if we want life,

Water’s the key.
