Rob Gantt/Gazette Goose Creek’s Christian Sillanpa (12) is congratulated by teammates after scoring a run against Wando.

Four different players had two hits each and senior leadership was on display in Goose Creek’s 8-4 victory over Wando on Monday night at GCHS in a key Region 7-AAAA baseball game.

“There is no doubt about it. We put a full game together,” Gators coach Chris Pond said. “Defense and two-out hits helped us win tonight.”

Senior hurler Cody Smith (4-2) tossed his fifth straight complete game, scattering four hits and two earned runs. He struck out seven batters to work around five walks.

He was also in the group that finished 2 for 4, and had two RBIs.

Senior third baseman Sean Freeland, senior shortstop Tyler Rio and senior Chris Singleton also had multiple hits.

Freeland and Rio drove in a pair each and Singleton pushed one run across.

The Gators (9-5, 5-2 region) can lock up second place and at least one home playoff game with a win at Wando on Wednesday. The two teams end the regular season with a non-region contest on Friday.

Goose Creek had 11 hits as a team.

“We’re starting to hit the ball one through nine,” Pond said.

After Goose Creek manufactured a single run in the bottom of the fifth to take it’s 8-4 lead, Wando (11-6, 5-2 region) loaded the bases in the top of the sixth but hit into an inning-ending double play on a line drive to Freeland.

Freeland snagged a hot shot from Owen Ravenell and then stepped on third to squash the threat.

Wando scored all four of its runs to take a 4-1 lead in the top of the second inning but Goose Creek stormed back with four in the bottom of the inning to regain the advantage.

Singleton’s RBI double made it 4-4 and Freeland followed with an RBI single to right field

Rio and Smith each doubled in runs in the third inning as Goose Creek built a 7-4 lead.

The Class AAAA playoffs begin Thursday, May 1.
