Tree kills Hanahan man after falling on house

  • Monday, April 21, 2014

Shortly after midnight on April 21 dispatchers received a 911 call saying a large tree fell onto a house at 5 Leone Court in the Otranto community of Hanahan.

William Carl Klein, 72, was sitting in a chair in his upstairs den when the tree fell and pinned him, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury.

Firefighters worked to extricate him from the house and he was transported to a local hospital and died from injuries received in the accident, Salisbury said.

The backyard tree fell because of the recent heavy rainfall, according to Salisbury.

The death will be ruled as accidental and was investigated by the Hanahan Police Department and The Berkeley County Coronerís Office.
