With each passing weekend, the track and field season gets closer to to the finish line.

On Saturday, two notable meets prepared local thinclads for the home stretch.

The state championships are a month away.

In Columbia at the talent-packed 22nd annual Taco Bell Classic, Goose Creek High School sprinter Deondre Daniels bested the field in the 400-meter dash. He also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Over 100 squads from eight different states competed in the Taco Bell Classic. Behind Daniels, the Gators were fifth overall.

Stratford High School's T.J. Deveaux was runner-up in the discus.

Goose Creek's Pedro Manigault was third in the high jump.

Other top finishes in the boys meet were turned in by Stratford's Brandon Mullins (pole vault, sixth), K.J. Givens (400 hurdles, seventh) and Jared Terhune (shot put, eighth).

In the girls meet, Goose Creek's Destiny McKnight was sixth in the 400 hurdles and eighth in the 100 hurdles.

Also on Saturday, Cane Bay High School held an invitational meet.

Hanahan's boys and Bishop England's girls were the team champions.

Cane Bay was third in both meets.

Hanahan won six events and Cane Bay two.

Hanahan's Sam Denmark (100 meters), Kahlim Denmark (200, 400), Quan Wade (discus) and Tre Smalls (shot put) were first in individual events, while the Hawks' 400-meter relay team was first. That group was Sam Denmark, Quan Wade, Kahlim Denmark and Saaehim Brooks.

Rashad Andrews won the 110-meter hurdles for Cane Bay while Devin Dingle, Matrell Douglas, Romante Frasier and Najee Walker won the 1,600-meter relay for the Cobras.

The Lady Cobras managed to wind up third despite having no winners. They had four runner-up finishes.

In upcoming meets, the Berkeley County championships will be held April 23-24 at CBHS and the tri-county meet of champions is slated for April 26, also at CBHS. For complete results, please see www.scrunners.com.
