North Charleston United Methodist Church has announced that its Maundy Thursday worship service will feature a new Last Supper play, “Beneath the Upper Room.”
The play will be presented in on Maundy Thursday, April 17, at 7 p.m.
The show will be presented in the North Charleston United Methodist Church sanctuary, 1125 East Montague Avenue, North Charleston. Communion will be served.
The short play, written by Kevin M Reese, tells the story of Jesus’ Last Supper, but from the viewpoint of the women who served the meal. This unique re-telling of the age-old story brings new relevance to our lives today.
“When I was researching the story,” Reese said from his rural Kansas home, “I knew I didn’t want to write yet another play about 13 guys sitting around asking, “Is it I, Lord?’ I was visiting relatives back home, and it dawned on me as to what room in the house was the most important, the most vibrant – the kitchen. I come from a very large family and grew up with lots of aunts in the kitchen, cooking meals and solving the world’s problems. That was the inspiration behind the play.”
Since 1993, KMR Scripts shows have been produced by theatres throughout the US and numerous foreign countries to more than two million people. ”Beneath the Upper Room” has been presented in over 80 churches all over the US since its premier in 2006.
