The two major leaguers with Stratford High School ties bolted out of the gate in the opening week of the MLB season.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Matt Wieters hit safely in all five games he played in last week, going 7 of 19 (.368 BA). His top performance was against the Boston Red Sox on April 3 when he had three hits. He had a solo home run on Sunday in a 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers.
Seattle Mariners first baseman Justin Smoak was 7 of 24 (.292 BA) with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBIs.
He drove in seven runs in the opening three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.
In Double-A, former SHS standout Justin Greene hit safely in all three games last week for the Mobile Bay Bears in the Southern League.
The outfielder is hitting .273 with two RBIs.
At Charleston Southern, former SHS standout Bobby Ison has reached safely in 30 of 35 games. On the season, the outfielder is batting .379 in with 13 stolen bases, six doubles and one home run.
The Bucs (16-19) host Gardner-Webb in another Big South series on April 11-13.
At The Citadel, Hanahan product Skylar Hunter is the closer for the Bulldogs (13-20). He has thrown 24-plus innings and fanned 28 batters. He has a 2.22 earned-run average and six saves.
Also for the Bulldogs, catcher Ryan Kilgallen (Stratford) is batting .278 and infielder Bret Hines (Hanahan) is batting .263.
Former GCHS pitcher Zach Lavery has a 3.18 ERA in seven appearances for the Bulldogs.
In Div. II NCAA, infielder Mike Gonzalez (Stratford) is batting .239 for the Limestone Saints. Evan Jordan (Hanahan) has a 5.33 ERA in 25.1 innings pitched for Anderson.
In junior college, four former prep standouts play at Florence-Darlington Tech.
Zach Wimmer (Cane Bay) has thrown 22-plus innings for the Stingers with 25 strikeouts and seven walks. He has a 2-0 record with a 1.99 ERA.
Daniel Huskey (Stratford) has pitched 13-plus innings with 10 strikeouts. He has a 5.40 ERA and a 2-0 record.
Outfielder Quinton Cable (Cane Bay) is batting .225 while Brandon Hester (Stratford) has thrown four innings with three strikeouts.
At USC Lancaster, Ryan Manore (Hanahan) is batting .367 with eight RBIs and nine runs. He’s also pitched nine-plus innings with 15 strikeouts and a 0.93 ERA.
