The Lowcountry Wrestling Academy has been around for three years and competed at a championship level the whole time.

The local club recently won the 2014 South Carolina Youth Wrestling Association (SCYWA) club championships for the third year in a row.

The team consisted of youth wrestlers in all six SCYWA divisions, ranging from ages 6 and under to high school. The club, located in Sangaree off Highway 17A, had at least one state champion in every division and 25 grapplers earned all-state status by finishing inside the top four in their classes.

Among the group were 12 individual state champions, more than any of the other 40-plus youth wrestling programs that competed in the state championships.

The club’s state champions were Will Steinmeyer (Under 6 – 45 pounds), Dominick Polesovsky (U8 – 50 pounds), Tyler Nelson (U8 – 70 pounds), Robert McLeod (U10 – 60 pounds), Jackson Proctor (U10 – 65 pounds), Kalil Jenkins (U10 – 103 pounds), Cole Messina (U10 – 112 pounds), Joshua Maningding (U12 – 85 pounds), Tyler Hunter (U12 – 90 pounds), Matt Slayman (U12 – 120 pounds), QuMari Jackson (U15 – 180 pounds) and Kemp Shider (HS – 138).

The club’s state runner-ups were Cole Green (U8 – 65 pounds), Kyle Dantico (U10 – 55 pounds), Logan Guanzon (U10 – 90 pounds), Chandler Amaker (U12 – 70 pounds), Preston Soriano (U12 -75 pounds), JB Brown (U12 – 80 pounds) and Aaron Watkins (HS – 113 pounds).

Third-place finishers were Roman Watford (U10 – 75 pounds), Dougie Metts (U12 – 85 pounds), Zach Jurey (U12 – 90 pounds), Trysten LaBrier (U15 – 110 pounds) and Hayden Prince (U15 – 115 pounds).

Mason Hinshaw had a fourth-place finish (U6 – 55 pounds).
