On March 15 and 16, 38 Tapio School of Dance and Gymnastics, Inc. company members took the Royal Academy of Dance International Ballet Exam. This exam is used worldwide to assess ballet students through a standardized program with a universal grading scale. The dancers have been preparing for this exam for the past year with Tapio's certified Royal Academy of Dance instructor, Elizabeth D. Romagnuolo. The dancers are required to perform a variety of ballet, modern and character dances in front of the examiner while accompanied by a pianist. The dancers, ranging from age 8 to 15, are judged on a pass-or-fail basis.
Tapio School of Dance and Gymnastics is the only studio in recent years throughout Charleston County to test this many qualified dancers at one time. The R.A.D. program has been in existance since the early 1920s, and has gained recognition worldwide as an excellent program for training and assessing student ballet dancers. The R.A.D. currently judges more than 250,000 entries world wide in more than 80 countries.
