Stratford’s Habib leads voter registration movement

What can one person do to increase the awareness of the importance of voting?

Ask the president of the student body at Stratford High School, Phillip Habib.

Habib recently contacted elected officials from across the Lowcountry to request their help in making a voter registration video to show to students.

Congressman Mark Sanford, Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, Goose Creek Mayor Michael Hietzler, and Goose Creek City Councilman Jerry Tekac made videos. The videos were shown at Stratford and offered to other Berkeley County High Schools.

Habib spoke to the student body presidents of Berkeley, Cane Bay, Goose Creek, Hanahan, and Timberland and asked them to encourage participation in the voter registration drives in their schools, also.

Jane Pulling of the League of Women Voters was an invaluable resource for Habib because she was able to make all the materials for registering available for the events at each school.

Habib said that he considers the drive a success not only at Stratford, where 165 students registered, but across the district with a total of over 600 newly registered voters (Berkeley, 105; Cane Bay, 102; Goose Creek, over 100; Hanahan, 65; and Timberland, 65).
