Two Lowcountry basketball standouts sparkled at the all-star level on Saturday.

Stratford product Demetre Rivers was named the Most Valuable Player for the South Carolina squad after scoring 15 points and pulling down five rebounds in 25 minutes during the state’s 102-90 loss to their North Carolina counterparts in the Carolinas All-Star Classic in Myrtle Beach. Goose Creek’s Dantez Bennamon scored 17 points in 17 minutes.

Each player made three 3-pointers in the game.

“They represented themselves and the area very well,” GCHS coach Blake Hall said.

“I was not surprised Demetre won the MVP,” SHS coach Troy Johnson said. “He’s a good kid and he works hard… The sky is the limit for him.”

The Mercer-bound Rivers also won the event’s slam dunk contest a night earlier.

“You can call him the little Michael Jordan,” Johnson said. “He went from being cut in the eighth grade by the Berkeley B-Team to the South Carolina MVP… He had a great weekend.”

Johnson was also referring to Mercer’s win over Duke in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.

Bennamon is still biding his time in choosing a college. Hall said Bennamon is “yet to narrow it down to what he wants to do.”

“He went head to head with the North Carolina guards. One signed with the Appalachian State and the other one signed with Clemson,” Hall said.
