Tyler Rio tossed a complete game, striking out 10 batters, and drove in two runs to power Goose Creek past rival Stratford 3-2 in the Region 7-AAAA opener for both teams on Wednesday at SHS.
Christian Sillanpa, Chris Singleton and Kyle Moore also had two hits for the Gators.
Game 2 of the three-game series is set for Thursday at SHS and the finale will be Friday at GCHS.
The score was tied 1-1 before a dramatic seventh inning decided it.
Singleton's RBI single gave the Gators the lead with one out in the top of the inning and Rio followed with an RBI double to score Singleton, making it 3-1.
The Gators left the bases loaded and that almost came back to haunt them when Jordan Lacavera doubled in a run and the Knights loaded the bases with one out.
But Rio was up to the task, recording back-to-back strikeouts of Jamison Mobbs and Justin Walker to end it.
Mobbs and Walker already had two hits each in the game. Stratford's first run came in the top of the first on Isaac Greer's RBI single.
Rio's single tied the score in the top of the sixth.
Rio allowed seven hits, walked four and surrendered two earned runs for the Gators.
Stratford southpaw Eddie Hiott was strong in the loss, scattering eight hits over 6.1 innings. He allowed two earned runs and struck out five batters. He walked four batters.
