Standouts make all-state basketball teams

Four area basketball standouts were recently named to the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Associationís all-state teams.

Stratfordís Demetre Rivers and Goose Creekís Dantez Bennamon were honored in Class AAAA boys basketball.

Hanahanís Rodney Keener was selected to the Class AAA boys basketball team.

Cane Bayís Makayla Dudley was on the Class AAAA girls all-state team.

All but Keener are seniors.

Rivers, a forward, averaged 24.3 points, 10 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in powering the Knights into the Class AAA playoffs. Stratford finished with 16 wins.

He has signed a scholarship to play at Mercer and will also represent the state in the Carolinas All-Star Classic in Myrtle Beach from March 20-22.

Bennamon, a guard, averaged 17 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists a contest for the Gators. He helped lead Goose Creek into the state quarterfinals. The Gators finished with a 24-3 record and shared the region title with Wando, which just went on to win the state crown.

Bennamon holds scholarship offers in both football and basketball.

He is also slated to play for South Carolina against North Carolina in the all-star classic.

Keener, a junior guard, averaged 17 points, six rebounds and two steals per contest for the Hawks. Behind Keener, Hanahan shared the Region 8-AAA title and made it to the second round of the playoffs. The Hawks finished with a 14-11 record overall and 8-2 region mark.

Dudley, a guard, averaged 12.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game for the Lady Cobras. Cane Bay made the playoffs after finishing second in Region 7-AAAA.

In addition to the all-state selections, the names of the North-South all-star players were released.

That game will be held March 22 at Lexington High School.

The lone area player on the South squad will be Goose Creek Lady Gators forward Shakeia Joy. Joy averaged 9.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.1 steals for the Lady Gators.

Stratford boys basketball coach Troy Johnson will lead the South boys team.
