The first two big goals on the list for the Goose Creek Lady Gators basketball team every season are behind them now. The Lady Gators eclipsed the 20-win mark and locked up the Region 7-AAAA championship with a 53-27 victory over Wando on Friday night at GCHS. “Next (goal) is hope we get a shot to go to Florence (Lower State) and then maybe on to Columbia (state)” Baldwin said. Baldwin’s team jumped out to a 15-0 lead after a period and coasted to their 21st win in 23 games. They are 7-0 in region play. Freshman forward Ericka Broughton scored a game-high 24 points while freshman guard Mariah Linney added 11 points. Senior Shakeia Joy and sophomore Shakayia Wilson led the rebounding effort with nine boards apiece. Senior center Semoine Frasier added seven points and seven rebounds. “I think we’re starting to play pretty good, especially in the post area,” Baldwin said. “Once we get those girls established, it opens up our shooters. We get some tough defense going full court and it just repeats itself. As long as we play at that level, we’ve got a shot.” The Lady Gators end the region slate on Tuesday at Cane Bay. The playoffs begin Feb. 18. The Lady Gators will open up the postseason against the fourth-place team from Region 8-AAAA. On the season, Linney (11.3), Broughton (9.6), Joy (9.6), Frasier (8.8) and senior guard Alex Ludwig (8.2) are the top scorers. Joy (7.3) and Broughton (7.0) are the top rebounders. Linney leads in assists (4.7) and steals (4.3).
