Cruising along at No. 1 and enjoying a special season, the Goose Creek Gators got a wakeup call last week.
The Wando Warriors drilled Goose Creek 74-40 last Tuesday in Mount Pleasant.
“You always look for things that put you back into reality,” Goose Creek coach Blake Hall said.
“You never want to take a loss, especially a butt kicking like Wando gave us, but it was a good motivator for our kids to come back and work hard the next day at practice.”
The Gators responded on Friday against Cane Bay, rounding out the first rotation through the region slate with a 62-34 victory.
The Gators (18-2, 3-1 region) raced out to a 28-2 lead in the opening half and were never seriously threatened.
Dantez Bennamon led Goose Creek with 10 points while Kameron Robinson and Evan McField added nine points each. Jordan McElveen chipped in seven points.
The Gators travel to Stratford on Friday, Jan. 31 for a rematch with their rivals.
Goose Creek won the first meeting, 54-47.
Goose Creek also defeated West Ashley in double overtime in the first trip through the region slate.
