Knights, Gators win region encounters before showdown

On Jan. 22, the wrestling teams at Goose Creek and Stratford did their parts to set up Monday’s showdown for second place in the region slate.

The Knights knocked off West Ashley 64-12, while Goose Creek defeated Cane Bay 53-18.

Each squad improved to 2-1 in the region with the wins.

In their win, the Knights got pins from John Watkins (113), Ross Johnson (126), Kemp Shider (138), Michael Stickney (145), JD Harrelson (160), Avery Legatte (171) and T.J. Deveaux (182) in improving to 15-7 on the season.

In the Gators’ win over Cane Bay, Dylan Wheat (126), Chris Theriot (132), Jaret Dicken (138) and Mason Palmer (195) had pins.

In another wrestling match on Jan. 22, James Island defeated Hanahan 42-33. The Hawks finished Region 8-AAA with a 3-2 mark.

The Hawks received pins from Devin Hatchell (113), Tyler Talacko (120), Jacob Van Maanen (132) and Dariell Flores (160).

The wrestling playoffs begin on Feb. 8.
