Mayor files for re-election

Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler was two minutes early when he walked into the Berkeley County Elections and Voter Registration building on Jan. 23.

It was 11:58 a.m. when Heitzler walked into the white building on Belt Drive in Moncks Corner. Official filing for re-election began at Noon that day, which was the first day of filing.

The filing period for Goose Creek mayor and three city council seats runs from Jan. 23 Feb. 7, according to Berkeley County Elections & Voter Registration Director Adam Hammons.

At Noon, Heitzler pulled out his checkbook, filled out the filing form and turned in the $300 filing fee.

The Berkeley County School Board District 9 seat is also up for grabs in a special election after Scott Marino announced he is moving out of state. Filing for that seat closes on Feb. 7.

District 9 covers lower Berkeley County including parts of Goose Creek. The District 9 board member represents students from the following schools: Berkeley Alternative, Berkeley Elementary, Berkeley High, Berkeley Intermediate, Berkeley Middle, Cane Bay Elementary, Cane Bay High, Cane Bay Middle, College Park Elementary, College Park Middle, Cross Elementary, Cross High, Devon Forest Elementary, Sangaree Elementary, Sangaree Intermediate, Sangaree Middle, Stratford High and Whitesville Elementary.
