SCE&G is alerting customers to a scam that is affecting utility customers across the country and in SCE&G’s service territory.
Customers have reported receiving emails falsely claiming to be from Atmos Energy Corporation, based in Dallas, TX, and Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), based in San Francisco, Calif., saying that they have an overdue account balance.
This is not the case, and SCE&G customers need to be aware of the scam and how they can protect themselves.
Although SCE&G may email a customer regarding an overdue account balance you should not receive account notices from other utility companies.
Never give out personal information (account numbers, account balance, Social Security numbers, passwords, etc.) in response to an incoming call or email.
If you have questions about your SCE&G account, call its toll-free customer service line at 800-251-7234. Please note that SCE&G does not use its toll-free customer service number to make outgoing calls; only to take incoming calls.
If you think you’re the victim of a scam, notify your local law enforcement agency. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs also has a phone line for reporting consumer scams: 800-922-1594.
