Q. Why are there two left turn lights at Hwy. 17 North and Venning Dr. when there is only one lane to turn there? It seems confusing. - Andrea Deputy, Mount Pleasant
A. “All movements at a signal are required to have redundancy in the red signal lamps to avoid crashes that may occur if a red lamp goes dark. Since the north bound Venning left-turn operates only as a separate signal phase (protected arrow only and no permissive phase), then two red signal indications must be displayed in case one of the indications were to go out. This same type of phasing and signal head configuration also currently exists for the US 17 left-turns at this intersection.” - Brad Morrison, Director of Transportation, Town of Mount Pleasant
Q. Why are weeds and vines being allowed to grow over and through the new wall along Highway 17 south of Long Point Road? Are there plans to landscape in front of the wall? - Carl Nandrasy, Mount Pleasant
A. “Landscaping has been installed in front of the wall. The intent is to create a streetscape but not to hide the decorative wall. Over time the plantings will mature and create the streetscape. The landscaping includes live oaks, red buds, and cherries. In addition, shrubs to include American beautyberry, native azaleas, and dwarf yaupon holly have been planted. Several of these trees and shrubs are deciduous and do not have leaves this time of year. With respect to vines, the Town will continue to monitor this and any other undesirable growth and remove as necessary.” - Eric DeMoura, Town Administrator
Q. I have been watching with great interest the ongoing effort to bury the power lines between Muirhead Rd. and Olde Park. When will this project be completed and when will the power lines actually come down? In the event of a large storm and the subsequent usual power lines down, will our street section now underground, be effected by those downed lines on either end or will we not face the same outages? - Anonymous, Mount Pleasant
A. “A: The overhead to underground conversion project along Mathis Ferry Road between Olde Central Way and Muirhead Road was completed on 12/27/13. The poles have now been removed. Since this underground section is still fed from overhead lines back to the substation, it could still be affected by circuit-level events.” - Cedric Green, general manager of Southern Electric Operations (SCE&G)
Q. Can you explain why those rusty looking power poles along Coleman Blvd. aren’t painted?
A. “The poles are actually made from metal called weathering steel, also referred to as Corten Steel, which is the name the United States Steel Corporation used when they patented it. This type of steel is designed for the outermost layer to oxidize or rust. This outer rust layer keeps oxygen from contacting the inner steel, which prevents the rest of the steel from rusting.” - Cedric Green, General Manager, Southern Electric Operations (SCE&G)
