Stratford High School’s wrestling team finished the match like it hopes to end the season: strong.
The Knights scored the final 33 points of a Region 7-AAAA encounter with Cane Bay last week at SHS, winning 46-18 in the region opener for both teams.
“Our goal this year is to work hard at practice every day and see what kind of a team we can be in February, one day at a time, one match at a time,” Knights coach Willie Nearhood said. “We’re a team looking for some respect too. We had lineup issues at the beginning of the year but we’re slowly getting back.”
The win upped the Knights’ dual record to 13-3 on the season.
Cane Bay’s Matt Rudy recorded a pin at 215 pounds to give the Cobras an 18-13 lead after seven bouts but Stratford won the final seven matches to pull away. Daniel Dees started the streak with a decision in the heavyweight match and was followed by pins in three of the next four bouts.
Ross Johnson’s pin at 126 pounds gave the Knights an insurmountable 37-18 lead with two matches remaining.
“If you practice hard every day, these nights will take care of themselves,” Nearhood said.
