Hawks grapplers edge Fort Dorchester

  • Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Roger Lee/Gazette Darren King recorded a pin at 152 pounds for the Hanahan Hawks against Fort Dorchester.

Two teams strong in wrestling tradition went head to head at Fort Dorchester last Wednesday.

Hanahan won four matches by pinfall and three by forfeit as the Hawks handed Fort Dorchester a 42-39 loss. Jacob Van Maanen (132-pound class), Aaron Van Maanen (138), Darren King (152) and Cameron Blackmon (170) all pinned their Fort Dorchester opponent.

“It been a long year but tonight tastes good,” Hanahan coach Ray Adkins said. “We had some guys really show up tonight and I’m proud of the way our guys fought. Both teams had some wrestlers out and the forfeits helped. I think both squads are still trying to put the pieces together so they can make a run in the playoffs. Hopefully by February our lineups will be stronger.”

Hanahan, which claimed Class AA state championships in 2011 and 2012 and finished as the runner-up for AAA last year, is currently ranked sixth among the state’s 3-A teams.

A night earlier, the Hawks split matchups against Orangeburg-Wilkinson and Hilton Head. A close loss to Hilton Head will keep the Hawks from winning the region this season.

Fort Dorchester, which claimed Class AAAA state championships in 2007 and 2010 and finished as the state runner-up in 2009, is ranked seventh among 4-A teams.

For the Patriots Tyree Wright (120), A.J. Alford (160), Joseph Hutchinson (182), Quandre Chisolm (195) and D.J. Loggins (285) pinned their Hanahan opponent and Xavier Branscam (126) won an 11-8 decision.

“We have a lot of holes in our lineup right now but I thought we were ready for this match,” Fort Dorchester coach Ben LaPrad said. “I mean we have some young guys this year but that’s no excuse. We are doing things the same way we have done them for years but I’m not sure everyone is buying in. I don’t know that I have the answer right now but we have some great kids coming up so we are just going to keep working at it.”
