Knights topple Cane Bay on mat
Stratford High School’s wrestling team finished the match like it hopes to end the season, very strong.
The Knights scored the final 33 points of a Region 7-AAAA encounter with Cane Bay earlier this week at SHS, winning 46-18 in the region opener for both teams.
“Our goal this year is to work hard at practice every day and see what kind of a team we can be in February, one day at a time, one match at a time,” Knights coach Willie Nearhood said. “… We’re a team looking for some respect too. We had lineup issues at the beginning of the year but we’re slowly getting back.”
The win upped the Knights’ dual record to 13-3 on the season.
Cane Bay’s Matt Rudy recorded a pin at 215 pounds to give the Cobras an 18-13 lead after seven bouts but Stratford won the final seven matches to pull away. Daniel Dees started the streak with a decision in the heavyweight match and was followed by pins in three of the next four bouts.
Ross Johnson’s pin at 126 pounds gave the Knights an insurmountable 37-18 lead with two matches remaining.
“If you practice hard every day, these nights will take care of themselves,” Nearhood said.
