As the Region 7-AAAA slate nears, it’s safe to say the Cane Bay Cobras are getting it together on the basketball court. The Cobras have won two straight games, moving to 4-6 heading into Wednesday’s matchup at Stall High School. “We’ve been playing much better as of late after a bumpy stretch in early December,” Cane Bay boys coach Calvin Craft said. “Our team chemistry has improved a great deal and we’ve cut down on a lot of the bad habits that we just can’t afford to have against the teams we compete against.” Senior guard Jiquan Hammond scored 20 points last Friday in a win over Colleton County. “He is having a very good year scoring the basketball,” Craft said. “… He has now scored 20 or more in seven of our 10 contests and 30 or more in three of them.”† The Cobras’ secondary scorer hasn’t been the same guy consistently. “We’ve been getting really good, consistent play out of senior captain Najee Walker, who had taken over the point guard spot,” Craft said. “Louis Rivers has had some good moments but hopefully he can find consistency in his play. We will need him to be a factor down the stretch.” The Cobras begin the region slate at West Ashley on Jan. 14 and host Wando on Jan. 17. “The region once again looks very difficult with Goose Creek and Wando among the top 10 in the state AAAA rankings and Stratford featuring a Division 1 player on its roster.” • The Lady Cobras are 3-8 on the season, with senior Makayla Dudley leading the way with 13.2 points and 3.7 steals per game. Shameque Robinson is averaging 6.9 points and 6.5 rebounds a contest. Lindsay Manning is the top rebounder with 10 a game. She scores 3.5 points a game. †
