Lady Gators 4-2 over holiday break

Rob Gantt/Gazette Freshman Mariah Linney had 14 points to help power Goose Creek's girls past Spartanburg 77-41.

Two blowouts surrounded by one competitive loss were what the Goose Creek girls basketball team got in the second half of their holiday break.

The Lady Gators (9-2) ended the annual Carolina Invitational on Dec. 29 with a 77-41 victory over Spartanburg. In their first two games, the Goose Creek girls defeated Pinewood Prep 68-42 and lost to Bullitt East out of Kentucky 47-37. The Lady Gators played all three of their games at the Bishop England High School site.

In the last game, the Lady Gators raced out to a 43-18 lead at halftime and coasted by the Lady Vikings (6-3). Freshmen Mariah Linney led five players in double figures with 14 points, while freshman Ericka Broughton and seniors Semoine Frasier and Shakeia Joy had 12 points each. Senior Alex Ludwig chipped in 10 points.

Joy had nine points to lead the way against East Bullitt.

Linney and sophomore Ryan Bishop had 18 and 11 against Pinewood Prep.

In a holiday tournament before Christmas, the Lady Gators were 2-1 in the Shootout by the Sea. Joy had three double-doubles in that North Myrtle Beach event.

Also in the Carolina Invitational, Hanahan was 2-1 at the Hanahan site and met Cane Bay on the final day. The Lady Hawks defeated the Lady Cobras 38-34.

Hanahan also defeated Douglass, Ga. 59-41 after losing to Dacula, Ga. 54-49 on the first night.

In addition to Hanahan, Cane Bay lost to West Charlotte 51-42 and defeated Timberland 44-29.

Stratford was 0-3 at the St. Johns site, losing to Fort Dorchester, James Island and Berkeley.
