CSU women back in conference play this upcoming weekend

  • Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Charleston Southern's women's team is back in action this week as the Lady Buccaneers travel to Radford and Winthrop this weekend. The Lady Bucs begin the weekend on Saturday at the Dedmon Center against Radford before traveling to the WU Coliseum on Monday against Winthrop. Tipoff between the Bucs and the Highlanders is set for 2 p.m., while the Bucs and Eagles start on Monday at 2 p.m. Radford holds the 46-13 series advantage over the Buccaneers, while Winthrop holds the 35-29 edge over CSU in the all-time series. After a week off, the Buccaneers look to continue the momentum built during the Savannah State game last weekend as Charleston Southern fell at home to the Tigers this past Thursday evening. Although the Bucs fell behind early in the contest, CSU continued to battle back in cutting the deficit down to six points on several different occasions before the Tigers put the game away from the free throw line in the 72-63 win. Freshman forward Tatum Jarvis continued her standout season in the game, narrowly missing out on her first career double-double with 25 points and nine rebounds to pace the Charleston Southern offense in the game. Jarvis shot 7 for 10 from the floor, including a perfect 3 for 3 from behind the 3-point line, while also getting to the free throw line consistently with 12 attempts. Fellow freshman guard Alyssa Mann was in double-digits for the second consecutive game with 11 points, while senior guard Erin Bratcher continued to find a way to put the ball in the net with 12 points in the game. The Lady Buccaneers enter the weekend possessing an 0-1 record in Big South Conference play, falling to UNC Asheville 61-46 on Dec. 2. On the season, senior guard DJ Fowler leads the Buccaneers with 10.9 points per game, connecting at a 53.7 percent rate from the floor on the season. Fowler is also averaging three assists per game while leading the Big South with 4.1 steals per game. Bratcher is also averaging double-digits on the season at 10 points per game. Last season against Radford, Charleston Southern fell in both matchups with the Highlanders, dropping a 71-60 decision inside the Dedmon Center Arena and a 64-57 decision inside the Buc Dome. The Buccaneers also fell in both matchups against Winthrop, falling 85-65 on the road, and 73-65 at home.
