Bishop England center Ben Carico stepped to the line, with no time left on the clock, his team tied on the road, and sank a free throw to lift the Bishops past the Academic Magnet Raptors 60-59 Tuesday in North Charleston.

Bishop England (4-3, 1-0) held at least a 10-point lead throughout most of the game but Academic Magnet (2-3, 0-1) came storming back in the fourth quarter to score 22 points and tie the game in the final minute.

“Academic Magnet just wouldn’t quit,” Bishop England head coach Bryan Grevey said. “Our kids might have let up a little bit in the fourth quarter but credit Academic Magnet, they just kept fighting.

“Ben has proven that he’s capable of knocking down free throws so we felt pretty comfortable with at the line with two shots to win the game.”

Bishop England guard B.J. Grevey heated up early with eight-point first quarter that carried the Bishops to a 21-15 lead by the end of the opening frame. Grevey finished with 21 points leading all scorers. Ivan Fields added eight, and Taylor Howell and Dillon Corbett both turned in six.

Raptors star guard Tyree Moore scored 12 points but struggled with foul trouble, relegating him to the bench for most of the fourth quarter. Peter Hogan and Ben Sewell picked up the slack, combining for 30 points to lead Academic Magnet’s second-half charge.

“We knew it was going to be a very hard-played second half,” Coach Grevey said. “It was very nice to see our kids rebound from the losses to Wando. Those games really helped us. That style of physical play showed our kids what they have to do to compete in that type of game. They took what they learned and didn’t make the same mistakes.”
