Camp Happy Days to host events to help kids fight cancer

  • Friday, November 29, 2013

This Holiday Season Camp Happy Days will host a series of events throughout the Lowcountry to raise money for children fighting cancer. “Our goal is to make sure that these children know they are not alone in their fight and to give them a respite from the disease that is stealing some of their childhood,” says Eleanor Smythe, executive director of Camp Happy Days. The events include Becoming an Angel Sponsor, Photos with Santa at California Dreaming and the Cabooty Holiday Party.

This year Camp Happy Days has teamed up with The Alley Downtown as community partners in the Holiday Giving Program. Starting Nov. 25, The Alley in downtown will have a bin set up where you can bring a new unwrapped gift to give for a child fighting cancer this holiday season. Gifts may be for any child infancy through 18 years of age.

In addition, Camp Happy Days is also offering an opportunity to become an “Angel Sponsor” as part of their Holiday Giving Program. This year the organization has more than 70 families who need assistance. Last year they were able to provide assistance to 171 Camp Happy Days children from 64 families. Families were given bikes, dolls, games and other wrapped packages and they were amazed and touched by the outpouring of love and support from the community. Camp Happy Days will match each sponsor with a child’s wish list. Every list will be different; however the estimated cost for gifts is $75 to $150 per child. The deadline to become an Angel Sponsor is Dec. 2.

On Sunday, Dec. 1, Camp Happy Days will participate in the Charleston Holiday Parade in downtown Charleston starting at 2 p.m. After the parade, California Dreaming will host a special complimentary dinner for the families of Camp Happy Days. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. and will be filled with food, crafts and fellowship and a special visit from Santa. Children fighting cancer and their families will get a free photo with Santa to celebrate the holidays. Then every Monday from Dec. 2 through the 23, Santa will be at California Dreaming from 5 to 7 p.m. to take pictures with the public for a donation of $5 benefiting Camp Happy Days.

On Friday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m., Camp Happy Days will host their 24th Annual Cabooty Holiday Party at Memminger Auditorium at 56 Beaufain Street in downtown Charleston.  Attendees will enjoy live music from Super Deluxe, heavy hor d’oeuvres, a full bar and a live and silent auction. The auction will include items such as travel packages, sports memorabilia, spa-days and much more. Tickets are $75 per person and several eight-person table packages are still available for purchase. The event is sponsored by Adams Outdoor Advertising, Anna Picone Graphics, Little Dog Agency, Branding by Travasos, Anchor Signs, Graze, Kickin Chicken and Swig & Swine.
