School board member resigning

Berkeley County School Board member Scott Marino has announced that he will be resigning from his District 9 seat by the end of the year.

He is accepting a new job in Texas and said he hopes for a smooth transition.

“(I am) focusing on moving my family and beginning my new career in Texas,” said Marino.

Marino, a critic of Superintendent Rodney Thompson, said he would like to see improvements in leadership and accountability.

“The problem is that a majority of the Board did not share my views,” he said. “Until there is a change of the majority of Board members, we will continue to see fiscal and management problems in the District, which ultimately hurts both the taxpayer and our children.”

Marino’s seat will be filled by a special election about three months after his exit.

“I hope I have accomplished my goal of protecting the taxpayers’ interests and being 100 percent for children,” he said.
