Cane Bay High School submitted 105 pieces of artwork into the Coastal Carolina Fair and came away with 102 awards, including the top honor, Best in Show Overall.

Every school in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties submitted artwork with the total being in the thousands.

Senior Amanda Hazell won the Best in Show Overall with her illustrated idiom, My Fair Lady. Hazell also took home four other awards including the Judge’s Award.

Students used a variety of inexpensive materials including: No. 2 pencils, Bic pens, matboard scraps and wood donated by Lowe’s in Goose Creek.

“We don’t have the highest budget so we used what we could,” said Paige Duvall, an art teacher at the school. “It’s amazing what they can do with just basic materials.”

Duvall and fellow art teacher Barb Richardson sponsor the art club at CBHS and have worked to get the students involved in the community.

“We’ve been fortunate to have a lot of gifted kids,” said Richardson. “We worked with Habitat for Humanity and painted murals inside the house. It all turned out really well.”

Submissions were due one week before the fair and the results were announced on Halloween night, the first day of the fair. CBHS principal Lee Westberry had high praise for the work by the teachers and students.

“Two art teachers, Barbara Richardson and Paige Duvall, do incredible work,” said Westberry. “Mrs. Richardson won a first place ribbon for her own art. This is why we have the best fine arts department in Berkeley County.”

It is not the first time Cane Bay has won awards for their artwork. They have also taken home prizes from the Quest, Artist and Craftsman, Southeastern Wildlife Expo, National Rifle Association Youth Wildlife, and North Charleston Arts Festival competitions.

“We give them assignments and techniques and let them practice,” said Duvall. “We set high expectations for our students and it is up to them to exceed them.”
