Lady Gators end season in first round

The Goose Creek volleyball team ended the season with a 16-15-2 record after being ousted by Bluffton in the first round of the Class AAAA playoffs last week.

They were swept in three games (25-7, 25-7, 25-11) by the Region 8-AAAA champions.

“They were the toughest team we’ve played this season other than Wando,” said GCHS coach Jay Watterworth, whose team was third in Region 7-AAAA, “but I thought we could have played better.”

The game was the last for two Lady Gators, setter Diemend Richardson and outside hitter Kalexia Wilson. Both were team captains.

Richardson had nearly 500 assists this season and will leave behind some huge shoes to fill, Watterworth said. Finding a replacement for Richardson will be among the top priorities in the offseason.

Wilson was among the top players on the team in kills, serving and digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Shakayia Wilson is set to return after leading the Lady Gators in kills (223) and digs (221). Other key players that could come back next season are freshman middle hitter Nailah Brown, sophomore defensive specialist Kali Berrigan and freshman right-side hitter Eternal Fuller.
