Lady Gators finish third in region

Rob Gantt/Gazette Coach Jay Watterworth and the Lady Gators finished the regular season with a 16-14-2 mark and placed third in Region 7-AAAA.

Goose Creek High School’s volleyball team has qualified for the postseason.

The Lady Gators swept Cane Bay and Charleston Math and Science on Oct. 22, finishing the regular season with a 16-14-2 mark. They were set to begin the Class AAAA playoffs at Region 8-AAAA champion Bluffton on Tuesday.

“We have endured a lot of challenges both on and off the court,” Lady Gators coach Jay Watterworth said. “We rely heavily on our setter (Diemend Richardson) and an outside hitter (Shakayia Wilson). Through it all, I am very proud of my team for reaching 16 wins and coming in third place in the region. This will be our fourth year in a row making the playoffs.”

The second round is Thursday.

The win over Cane Bay gave the Lady Gators a 4-4 mark against region foes and locked up a third-place finish in Region 7-AAAA for Goose Creek. The Lady Gators won that match 25-13, 25-20.

Shakayia Wilson and Kalexia Wilson combined for 16 kills. Shakayia Wilson added nine digs, while Diemend Richardson made 20 assists.

Wilson and Wilson combined for 11 kills and 14 digs in the 25-20, 25-18 win over Charleston Math and Science.

Eternal Fuller and Nailah Brown combined for nine digs and Richardson had nine assists.

Shakayia Wilson enters the playoffs the team leader in kills with 223, followed by Kalexia Wilson with 87, Brown with 85 and Richardson with 68.

Richardson ended the regular season with 491 assists.

The playoffs mark the final moments in a Lady Gators uniform for two seniors, Richardson and Kalexia Wilson.
