Hawks secure region crown

Hanahan had the big-play machine operating at peak efficiency on Friday night, rolling up over 500 yards in a 55-21 victory over Hilton Head.

The Hawks improved to 9-0 overall and locked down the Region 8-AAA title, their third straight region crown.

“It seems like we have these runs where we get on a roll, then teams get taken out of their game plans,” HHS coach Charlie Patterson said. “We’ve got guys that make a lot of big plays for us.”

The Hawks had four touchdowns of 62 yards or more in the rout, including long touchdown connections to Sam Denmark and Terrell Green.

Denmark’s 68-yard pass from Mason Schwerzler and Green’s 75-yard hookup gave the Hawks a 14-7 lead after a quarter.

From there, the plan was to give the ball to running back Quan Wade and get out of the way. Wade scored the next four touchdowns for Hanahan. His 69-yarder in the third quarter made it 41-7, then Green hauled in a 23-yard touchdown pass from Schwerzler to push the Hawks’ lead to 48-7 after three quarters.

“When he gets going downhill he’s hard to stop,” Patterson said of Wade. “He’s big strong and fast. We had some good seams for him to run in there because the line did a good job blocking. He can outrun people too. Glad he’s on our team.”

Kahlim Denmark capped the scoring with a 62-yard kickoff return late in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks conclude the regular season at home against Stall on Friday. The Warriors are 1-8 overall and 0-4 in Region 8-AAA.

Patterson said the Warriors have been competitive in region play.

“They have been improving,” he added. “Looking at some of their scores, it appears they are an improving team. They won’t have anything to lose when they come over here. We need to be ready to play well.”
