Stratford teams second in Region 7-AAAA meet
The final dress rehearsal of the cross country season was held last Wednesday when the Region 7-AAAA championships were contested through the trees and trails at Wannamaker Park.
All five schools in Region 7 automatically advanced to Saturday’s Lower State qualifier at Old Santee Canal Park.
Now, only the top five squads, and top 20 individuals, in both boys and girls qualifiers will survive to make the state meet on Nov. 9. All five teams from Region 8 along with Region 6 schools Carolina Forest and Conway will make up the 12-team field in the Lower State qualifier.
Also on Saturday, qualifiers will be held in the Mid-State and Upper State.
The state championships are set for the Sandhills Research Center in Columbia.
In the Region 7 championships, Wando swept both the boys and girls titles. The Warriors bested Stratford by 25 points in the boys race while the Lady Warriors edged Stratford by 12 points.
Cane Bay was a distant third in both boys and girls.
“Wando is a better team and may contend for the title,” Stratford coach Shane Sutherland said. “Our focus is to get better and try to run well enough to make it to state.”
