A Cane Bay Middle School student was sent to the hospital on Oct. 24 after his bicycle ran into the roadway on U.S.-176 and the student was struck by a car, according to officials.
The student was traveling east on U.S.-176 at about 7:30 a.m. when the incident occurred, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Sr. Trooper Bridget Wyant.
The student drifted into the road and into the passenger side of the 2001 Lincoln. The driver is not at fault. The driver attempted to swerve away from the student but he kept drifting into the road until he hit the car, Wyant said.
He was transported to Trident Hospital.
Berkeley County School District Pubic Information Officer Susan Haire said the student was in the vicinity of the Cane Bay schools but not on school grounds.
The student was conscious and responsive immediately following the incident, Haire said. EMS was called to the scene and the child was transported to the hospital where a school administrator met with the parent.
