Members of the Goose Creek International Triathlon Club are training to compete in the 2013 Ironman Florida Triathlon on Nov. 2.

An Ironman Triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run.

Ironman Florida will be held at Panama City Beach.

The athletes have been training since early spring with two goals. The first goal is to complete the event and earn the coveted title “Ironman.”

The second goal is to beat one of their friends in one or more of the events.

In training, they cycle up to 120 miles on a Saturday as well as shorter distances several days during the week. They run as much as 12 to 18 miles in one day and then run at least three other days per week. They swim one to two miles per week (4,000 yards).

The Goose Creek City pool at Crowfield County Club is open to the group Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 a.m.

The Goose Creek International Triathlon Club consists of about 20 dedicated tri-athletes that train together and compete in local triathlons in the Charleston Area.

GCITC Membership is informal, free and fun.

\They consider the Club “international” because Great Britain native and Stratford High School teacher Jon Edwards trained with the club all summer.

Steve Sabback, Chris Louden, Gary Vance, Don Oswalt and Karen Creighton will be attempting their first Ironman distance triathlon.
